Abstract:
In this thesis I will study the Meru, a population of central Kenya, in a colonial and a post-colonial temporality.
The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of the Christian conversion of the Meru of Kenya as well as to understand how the actors - Catholic and Protestant missionaries, Meru, British administrators - constructed the Christian family through negotiations and dialogues (Comaroffs), accommodations (Burrin), misunderstandings (Sahlins), resistances, innovations... I also hope, thanks to new, unused primary sources, to nuance new perspectives on Kenya's colonial history.
