Selecting by Origin: Ethnic Migration in the Liberal State

Conférence de Christian Joppke (American University in Paris)

This talk introduces to the presenter's monograph on ethnically selective immigration policies in liberal states. The main forms and features of such policies are compared across regime types (settler state, postcolonial, diaspora), with a special emphasis on the "diaspora" constellation (comparing Germany and Israel). The causes of the general demise of ethnic immigration policies are elaborated, and why exceptions to the rule nevertheless exist and are likely to persist.
