Demographic Challenges in Africa
Population perspectives produced by the UN suggest that the African population could be multiplied by more than five during the current century, mainly due to high fertility rates. African countries face challenges related to high dependency burden, shortage of resources available to invest in human capital, high youth unemployment, and the risk of political instability.
Demographic trends may however be influenced by economic trends and policies and, if well managed, could also be turned into development opportunities, as shown by other regions experience. The objective of this conference is to invite demographers and economists to debate, in a multidisciplinary spirit, on factors that could influence African demographic challenges, such as the interplay between fertility behaviours, education and health policies, and women empowerment.
