INED’s mission for 80 years now: understanding population dynamics, using scientific knowledge to imagine and reflect on the future

This October 24, 2025, INED celebrates its 80th anniversary. Since its founding, the Institute has been at work analyzing population dynamics in France and the world to better understand future demographic and social trends and developments.
Since its founding in 1945 [1], INED has been a major producer of knowledge on population, in France and throughout the world. The Institute’s mission is to describe and understand demographic issues and dynamics through scientific, multidisciplinary study.
Over the decades, INED research studies have been able to evolve not only in response to societal change but also technologically and in terms of methodology.
INED researchers and research technicians analyze the many, diverse dimensions of population phenomena (birth rates, mortality, migration, settlement, and others), with particular attention today to the themes and issues of inequality and discrimination by gender, origin, social class and regional location. Inequalities may concern reproductive rights and sexuality, the family and the social environment, health and mortality, education, employment, housing.
To explore these subjects in depth, INED designs and implements historical and sociological research, including both quantitative surveys and more qualitative studies, either on its own or with partners and collaborators, thereby producing original data that enrich public debate, debate in which scientists themselves are likely to intervene. Survey data supplement existing data from civil registries, public statistics, and various administrative sources as well as some data from private actors in accordance with specific conventions.
INED contributes to important European and international research projects on the major demographic changes and trends occurring in different regions of the globe, participating fully in the work of anticipating national and international needs created by changes in family and couple structures, increased longevity, and climate change.
Throughout this new year 2025, the Institute will be sharing its research on societal questions with the public at large through various events and activities.
