How many children in France live in a blended family?

Blended families are families in which an adult couple lives with one or several children of one but not the other couple member.

Of the 13,9 million children under 18 living in a family in France (with the exception of Mayotte) in 2023, 10.4% were living in a blended family. 6.9% were born to a couple no longer together and were living with a repartnered parent (5.1% with their mother and 1.8% with their father), a step-parent, and, possibly, half-sisters and/or half-brothers; 4% were children of the current couple, living with both parents and half-brothers and/or half-sisters. 3.5% were children of the current couple, living with both parents and half-brothers and/or half-sisters.

Blended families are larger than ’traditional’ families: 56.6% are large families (with at least 3 children), compared with 33.5% of ’traditional’ families.
